Successful Violin Study:
Teachers Make a Difference
The biggest investment you will need to make for violin study is the time and effort required to get satisfying results but your valuable time and effort can be squandered if you are given poor instruction from unqualified violin teachers. Your course of study and your choice of violin teacher will very much determine what you will achieve and the enjoyment you will get from study.
What You Need To Know about Violin Teachers
Before Your Child Begins Violin Lessons
Don’t simply rely on search terms like ‘best violin lessons near me’, ‘best violin teachers near me’, ‘best music schools’, or ‘best violin lessons for beginners’, to find and determine which teacher or program you will choose to provide you with violin training.
For those who have never had violin training or the experience of having violin lessons, it may seem a bit harsh to suggest that, too often, people who offer violin lessons have inadequate teaching skills, whether or not they claim to be qualified or have some kind of “certification”, degree in music, or some other knowledge, or training.
While there may certainly be some exceptions, too often, you will find that only poor or mediocre violin lessons are offered at your local music store or by teachers provided by online services who will come to your home.
Music stores are retail businesses that are in business primarily to generate retail sales. Their main business is to sell or rent instruments, to sell music books and sometimes push more or less useless accessories to pump up their profits. It’s easy to understand why commercial retail music stores that offer violin lessons will tend to be most concerned with closing the deal to sell or rent a violin with little understanding or concern for your child’s musical training. They are eager to get you to buy or rent violins they offer that are sometimes inadequate for study and not worth the prices they charge. You can easily end up renting an inadequate violin for more than it would have cost to buy a really good violin.
Owners and managers of music retail stores typically rent cramped little rooms to teachers without having much knowledge or concerns about the qualifications of these teachers. In addition to money made by renting studio space, teachers who rent studio space are able to generate additional revenue for music stores by pushing instrument sales and whatever else the music store is selling. Regrettably, some places that use the “music studio” or “music school” title are thinly disguised operations that very much rely on direct or indirect retail sales, kickbacks, and sales commissions.
There are also private teachers who come to your home. As with the teachers who rent studio space from retail stores, too many who claim to be able to teach the violin lack qualifications. It’s common to find unemployed or underemployed musicians without teaching skills who are fly-by-night teachers and teach just to get by between jobs. Some who may even be qualified to teach guitar, trumpet, flute or other instrument will claim to be violin teachers after having only read a book about violin teaching, learned to play in a high school orchestra, or taken a music course for semester at college. This is why you will want to observe and evaluate violin lessons or classes given by the teacher and, most importantly, to see how well a violin teacher’s students play to get some sense of how well they teach.
The bottom line is that a teacher needs to be able to provide excellent training. Learning to play the violin should be a rewarding activity and an enriching experience so that children look forward to coming to lessons and classes and are motivated to follow up with good work at home.
The Suzuki Music Academy has enjoyed great success training children from beginners to the most advanced levels.
