"As I sat in the Gym at Montessori Community School watching 50+ students rehearse the music for the holiday concert at the hospital, I wondered at the ability of so many kids from several different teachers to come together and perform as a whole. I witnessed this same phenomenon numerous times last year as my kids and I traveled across the state and into South Carolina for various institutes, workshops, and clinics. The ability of these children to play together with total strangers is remarkable. The Suzuki methodology presents our children and us with the opportunity to find common ground with students of different ages, lifestyles, economic backgrounds, languages, and religious affiliations. It is a lesson we try to instill in our children through word and example, and yet Suzuki has managed to teach them this important life lesson in the course of 10,000 twinkles.
We met a new student of Ingrid's at the beginning of this year who recently relocated from France. Sometimes Sophie struggles to find the correct French vocabulary or Thais struggles to find the correct English vocabulary to communicate with one antoerh, but their common Suzuki training allows them to play the same pieces without struggle. This is an amazing gift, both in its simplicity and its lifelong implications for living with and among each other. Your family's participation in a summer institute will be an opportunity to see these lessons in action. As you consider these institutes, plan to join our own musical community for a weekend of Suzuki By The Sea in February for music, fellowship, crafts, and fun.
